THE SMITH COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Meets 1st Tuesday of Every Month at – 7:00 P.M. Carnegie Building in Payne Auditorium Tyler, Texas

Purpose

The Smith County Historical Society is incorporated under the laws of the State of Texas and is known as Smith County Historical Society, Inc. The Society is a nonprofit organization formed in 1959 to discover, collect, and preserve data, records, and other items relating to the history of Smith County, Texas.

Chronicles of Smith County, Texas

The Chronicles (ISSN 0578-0462) are  compiled, edited, and published each year by the Publications Committee of the Smith County Historical Society. Contributions and correspondence relating to articles or other editorial matters should be sent to: Publications Committee • Smith County Historical Society • 125 South College • Tyler, TX 75702-7216. Archives

The Archives of the Society are located in the down town Tyler area in the Historic 1904 Carnegie Building, 125 South College Ave., Tyler, Texas 75702-7216. Hours of operation are Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

Museum

The Society Museum  is located in the down town Tyler area in the Historic 1904 Carngie Building, 125 South College Ave., Tyler, Texas 75702-7216. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Tours are available. Large groups should make reservations to have additional tour guides available.

Historic Carnegie Building

The Carnegie Building is the home of the Smith County Historical Society, Inc. The building was constructed in 1904, being endowed by Andrew Carnegie and until 1980 was Tyler’s public library. Upon the completion of the new municipal library, the former Carnegie library became an empty building whose future was in doubt. The building is one of four Carnegie buildings remaining in Texas. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Meeting and Programs

The Society holds regular monthly meetings on the first Tuesday each month at the Smith County Historical Society’s Payne Auditorium, 125 South College Avenue, Tyler, Texas, from 7:00 p.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m. Programs are educational and informative about the history of Smith County, Texas. Hospitality period precedes each program meeting, giving members and guests the opportunity to visit and become acquainted with one another as we preserve the history of Smith County, Texas. Meetings are free and open to the public.
